  1. Welcome to Star Warped.
  2.  
  3. This "Read Me" file contains the latest information about running
  4. Star Warped to insure the best playing experience possible.  Please
  5. refer to the printed "User Guide" for Star Warped instructions.
  6. Also, please refer to the printed "Online Guide" for details on
  7. configuring Star Warped to launch your browser and going online to
  8. the Star Warped web site.

  11. System Requirements
  12. ====================
  13.  
  14. To run Star Warped, your Macintosh must have at least:
  15.  
  16.  - A 33 MHz 68040 processor (PowerPC processor recommended)
  17.  - 8 MB RAM (16 MB recommended)
  18.  - 10 MB free hard disk space
  19.  - A double speed CD-ROM (quad speed recommended)
  20.  - System 7.1 (7.5 or later recommended)
  21.  - QuickTime 2.5 (supplied on the CD-ROM) or later
  22.  
  23. To connect to the Star Warped web site, you must also have:
  24.     
  25.  - At least12 MB RAM recommended
  26.  - A 14.4 Kbps modem (28.8 Kbps recommended)
  27.  - Netscape Navigator version 2.0 or later, or
  28.     Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later
  29.  - A subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), or
  30.       America Online 3.0 or later
  31.  - MacTCP 2.0.6 or later, or Open Transport 1.1 or later

  34. Troubleshooting
  35. ===============
  36.  
  37. If Star Warped Launcher fails to launch Star Warped:
  38.  
  39. 1. Before running Star Warped, close all open windows (except the
  40. Star Warped folder) and quit all running programs, including those
  41. that run automatically when you start up your Mac (such as screen
  42. savers and toolbars).
  43.  
  44. 2. Turn off nonessential extensions and control panels using the
  45. Extensions Manager control panel (restart your Mac afterwards).
  46. The extensions needed to run Star Warped are:
  47.  - Apple CD-ROM
  48.  - QuickTime
  49.  - QuickTime Powerplug (PowerPC's only)
  50.  - Sound Manager (System 7.1.x only)
  51. In addition, to go online, you need:
  52.  - MacTCP, Open Transport and PPP extensions
  53.  - Dialer (PPP) control panels
  54.     
  55. 3. If the above two steps fail to correct a launching problem,
  56. please upgrade your RAM to 12 MB or greater.
  57.  
  58. Video, Animation and Sound:
  59.  
  60. If you are experiencing problems with video, animation or sound:
  61.  
  62. 1. Set your monitor graphics mode to display 640x480 resolution
  63. with 256 colors.  To do so, launch the Monitors control panel.
  64.  
  65. 2. Turn off virtual memory.  To do so, launch the Memory control
  66. panel.  You must restart your Mac for this to take effect.
  67.  
  68. 3. Before running Star Warped, close all open windows and quit all
  69. running programs, including those that run automatically when you
  70. start up your Mac.
  71.  
  72. 4. Computers with slower components (33 MHz 68040's, 60 MHz Power
  73. PC's, 2X CD-ROM drives) or smaller memories (8 MB RAM) may exhibit
  74. poor audio/video performance and long delays (loads) between screens.
  75.  
  76. 5. If you don't see the opening Star Warped title video, you may not
  77. have QuickTime (QT) installed.  Star Warped requires QT version 2.5
  78. (or later) which is included on the CD-ROM.  You can check to see if
  79. you have QT installed and your QT version number.  Open the Systems
  80. folder, open the Extensions folder, select QuickTime (if installed),
  81. and press Command-I to get the version information.  If you need to
  82. install QT, double-click on the "Install QuickTime" icon in the
  83. CD-ROM folder.
  84.  
  85. 6. If you have a 68040-based MacIntosh (e.g. Quadra or an early
  86. Performa model), make sure that you set the Cache Switch control
  87. panel to "Faster."
  88.  
  89. Going Online:
  90.  
  91. If you have trouble visiting the Star Warped web site from within the
  92. Star Warped program:
  93.  
  94. 1. Run Browser Setup to configure Star Warped to launch your browser.
  95. Browser Setup cannot find an open browser -- make sure that you quit
  96. your browser before running Browser Setup.
  97.  
  98. 2. Make sure that your browser and dialer are configured to connect
  99. to your ISP, then try launching your browser to a well-known web page
  100. BEFORE running Star Warped and going online.  If you don't see the web
  101. page (make sure it's not "cached" on your hard drive), call your ISP
  102. for support.  If you do see the web page, try launching your browser
  103. to http://www.parroty.com next.  If you can't enter the Parroty site,
  104. our web server may be busy or unavailable, so please try again later.
  105.  
  106. 3. You must run Browser Setup after installing the AT&T Worldnet
  107. browser, or any updated browser you choose to install later.
  108.  
  109. 4. To return to Star Warped after going online, make sure you quit your
  110. browser.  Closing the last (or only) open browser window won't quit
  111. your browser.
  112.  
  113. 5. Open Transport improperly unloads from memory, resulting in a Type
  114. 11 system error, requiring you to restart your Mac.  Make sure that Open
  115. Transport doesn't unload when you disconnect from your ISP:
  116.  - Open the TCP/IP Control Panel.
  117.  - Select Edit, then select User Mode.
  118.  - Click the Advanced button and click OK.
  119.  - Click Options (lower right of screen).
  120.  - Click to uncheck "load only when needed" and click OK.
  121.  - Close the TCP/IP Control Panel and click Save.
  122.  
  123. 6. Apple's PPP dialer installed with Open Transport doesn't run reliably
  124. with System 7.6.  Please upgrade your system to version 7.6.1 or later.
  125.  
  126. 7. Some 68040 configurations fail to launch Netscape Navigator 2.0x
  127. browsers (including the WorldNet browser found on this CD-ROM) to
  128. the Star Warped web site from the Star Warped program.  If this is the
  129. case, please use Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later, or Microsft Internet
  130. Explorer 3.01 (recommended with 8 MB RAM Macs) or later.

  132. 8. If Star Warped fails to launch your browser, see troubleshooting
  133. items (1) through (3) above under "If Star Warped Launcher fails to
  134. launch Star Warped."

  137. Other:
  138.  
  139. 1. If you have a PowerPC-based MacIntosh, make sure that you turn on
  140. the Modern Memory Manager in the Memory control panel.
